Practice: Light III

First we completed a short bell work to help with #1 on the homework. The rest of the day was work time for Light III, which is due Tuesday. Your test is next Friday.

Colors

Today we talked about colors - what they are, how they are mixed, etc. Note that the primary colors of light are NOT the same ones you may have learned in art. We looked at several demos and pictures online, but what you really need to know is in the bell work below.

Speed of Light

Today we did a sort of demo-lab to calculate the speed of microwaves in air. We then compared this to the speed of light in a vacuum: 300,000,000 m/s. Some notes of this process can be found here, and the homework tonight is Light II. You are encouraged to use scientific notation on the homework, and it may be helpful to know that the speed of sound in air is only 340 m/s - almost a million times slower than light!

Today we went through a basic introduction to light. There is no homework tonight, but I hope to see everyone at the game today! Also, here is a pretty good animation of an electromagnetic wave.

Honors: Harmonics

Today we looked at some simulations of harmonics in musical instruments and practiced problems similar to last night's homework. Simulations here, here, and here. An interesting read on sound spectrum here.

Conceptual: Unit 1 Study Guide

Today is your day to work on the study guide for the test tomorrow. You do not need to turn this in, but please use it to make a 3"x5" note card. I will take 8 questions off this study guide for the test. Also, it seems that this online version refuses to show the last two questions, which use pictures. Sorry about that.

Honors: Standing Waves

Today we worked on a lab about standing waves. Homework is Waves III, for which you will also need last night's reading.

Doppler Effect

Today we practiced a bit with beats, then did a demo and some notes on the Doppler Effect. We also looked at some simulation of the Doppler effect here and here. Conceptual does not have homework tonight, but they have a test on Thursday. Honors has a reading about harmonics tonight.

No homework tonight for Conceptual, but Honors has Waves I, due Monday.

A Bit on Earthquakes + Practice

We talked a little about earthquakes today, then spent the rest of the period working on Waves I worksheet.  That's a kind of practice test and is due tomorrow.

For some reason I forgot to take a picture of the second page of notes...sorry :( The important thing on there was that the speed of a wave is speed = wavelength x frequency and is only dependent on the medium and the type of wave.

Homework is Concept-Development 25-1.There is a back, but I don't have a picture of it.

Today we started our first unit with an exploratory lab on waves. We'll be finishing it tomorrow, and using what you discover to make notes about waves on Friday. Please keep your observations in your notebook; do not turn it in.
